Race Unlock Paths in EverQuest Legends

How to unlock Wood Elf, Half Elf, Iksar, Dark Elf, and Dwarf in EverQuest Legends through faction turn-ins, crafting, and the Untapped Potential achievement chain — no Iridium required.

EverQuest Legends is LIVE. Guides current through August 16, 2026 — August 18 Mistmoore preview next.

Why Race Unlocks Matter in Legends

EverQuest Legends ships with fifteen classic races at launch, but only a subset are available to a fresh character. The rest require either Iridium purchases or — better — Untapped Potential achievements you can finish through normal play. Race unlocks are account-wide: once earned, every future character you roll on that account can pick the unlocked race at creation.

The cheapest, fastest routes are short faction turn-ins inside starting cities. Wood Elf and Half Elf fall out of a single ten-minute Freeport shopping trip. Dark Elf is Neriak-only but a faction hand-in rather than a quest chain. Dwarf trades a brewed tonic for faction. Iksar is the most involved: it requires high-quality ore from Qeynos plus Crusader Iktra's faction test in North Ro. Plan your alts around the unlock you actually want to play.

Wood Elf and Half Elf — Freeport Muffin Run

The shortest race unlock on live is the Wood Elf + Half Elf chain inside West Freeport. Buy 500 Muffins from Pincia Brownloe (in building 11 near the theater, roughly (-276, -698)) and 500 White Wine from Swin Blackeye inside the inn (roughly (-158, -527)). Two vendors, one inn, no zoning out.

Hand the Muffins to Pandos Flintside upstairs (next to Lady Shae's room, around (-204, -497)). He accepts 400 at a time, so plan on two passes. After the muffins, go back downstairs and hand the White Wine to Lady Shae. Two different faction lists move, the muffin list and the wine list — that is why you buy 500 of each even though the gate is 2,000 standing. The wood-elf unlock at 2,000 faction drops in alongside Half Elf without extra turn-ins, so you get two races for one trip.

Faction hits: Faydark Champions, King Tearis Thex, Clerics of Tunare, and Soldiers of Tunare all rise by +5 per muffin turn-in; Crushbone Orcs drop by -1. The wine turn-in moves Emerald Warriors, Merchants of Felwithe, and Merchants of Kelethin up; Indigo Brotherhood down. If you roll an Iksar, you start deep in the negative on Felwithe / Tunare factions and have to climb out before any of this counts.

Bring sneak or a Dark Elf illusion if your Freeport faction is poor. Both vendors and the turn-in NPCs sit inside guard territory. Once both lists complete and the client stops stalling on the 500 hand-ins, open Untapped Potential → Races and confirm Wood Elf and Half Elf are unlocked. Edit a loadout, set the race, save — you can now play the new face. Gender is fixed per loadout, so pick deliberately.

Dark Elf — Neriak Red Wine

For Dark Elf, run the short Neriak chain. Buy 500 Red Wine from the bartender on the Third Gate (Neriak's outer ring) and hand it to Lokar To'Biath inside the library. Sneak is required for much of the route — Dark Elf-to-Dark Elf faction is fine, but the Third Gate bartender walks through guards on rotation.

Unlike Wood Elf, this is one NPC and one faction list. Five hundred individual turn-ins lag the client for the same reason Pandos does. After completion, the Dark Elf option appears in Untapped Potential. The same chain counts toward Tiered of the Indigo Brotherhood and the related Teir'Dal faction unlocks — useful for evil-side alts.

If you have already rolled Dark Elf as a starter race, skip this section. If you want it as a secondary race for alts, finish this chain once and forget about it.

Iksar — North Ro Ore Turn-Ins

Iksar is the most expensive unlock because it trades a currency you cannot buy directly. You need small pieces of high quality ore — usually metal bits and high-quality ore looted in Qeynos-area mines or purchased on the Qeynos auction board — handed to Crusader Iktra in North Ro along with enough faction to be considered friendly.

Because the ore type is shared with crafting and the prices move weekly, the Iksar unlock typically costs platinum more than a Wood Elf or Dark Elf chain. Once Iktra's faction flips, the Iksar option appears in Untapped Potential. Iksar characters start in Cazic-Thule (good faction) and have the Iksar-only Shackle of Bone no-trade quest line — see the Plane of Fear page for raid context.

Plan ahead: Iksar-friendly is also Erudite-hostile, which can complicate some Odus chains. Roll a non-Iksar alt on Odus first if you want to use Erudin services.

Dwarf — Tumpy Tonics Brewed in Bulk

Dwarves unlock through Tumpy Tonics, a brew you make from Kiola Nuts and Water Flasks. Roughly 800 tonics clears the faction gate. Hand them to Trantor Everhot in North Kaladim, on the Antonica side of the Butcherblock boat route.

The brewing is the whole quest. Each tonic takes one nut and one flask, so 800 tonics means 800 nuts and 800 flasks — easy if you have a Druid or Ranger running Kiola Grove near the Steamfont Mountains, otherwise slow. Trantor gives +5 faction per tonic on the friendly Dwarf lists and -1 on the opposing orc list. Tumpy Tonics cannot be made in bulk via stack; you brew one at a time.

Dwarf unlocks are often paired with Wood Elf — Pandos Flintside's muffin turn-in reportedly feeds into the Dwarf unlock faction chain as well. The community has not confirmed the exact handoff on live, so test it on your next run.

Agnostic Deity and the Oasis Quest

Deity unlocks follow the same Untapped Potential pattern. The cheapest non-Iridium path is the Agnostic deity — accept the Oasis quest from a desert temple, then kill Cazic-Thule in Plane of Fear and Rook near the Oasis to flip factions. This is the only deity unlock that some launch players unlocked already because they ran the Erudin-side quest arc early.

Other deities open via Temple visits in Qeynos, Freeport, Kelethin, or Erudin plus tiered Untapped Potential achievements. Deity unlocks do not change a current character's deity — they widen what is available on your next creation screen.

Quick Reference Checklist

Plan alts in this order if you want to minimize time spent unlocking:

  • Wood Elf / Half Elf — 10 minutes in West Freeport, 500 muffins + 500 wine, no zoned quest.
  • Dark Elf — 500 Red Wine in Neriak's Third Gate, single NPC hand-in.
  • Dwarf — 800 brewed Tumpy Tonics, ~1 hour if you camp Kiola nuts.
  • Iksar — buy or farm high-quality ore, hand to Crusader Iktra in North Ro.
  • Agnostic deity — Oasis quest plus Cazic-Thule and Rook kills.

Once a race unlocks, you can roll that race on any future character on the same account. Loadouts can swap race mid-life by editing an existing loadout. Cross-reference races and Kerran for faction and class restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do race unlocks cost Iridium?
No. Every race listed here is unlockable through the Untapped Potential achievement chain — Iridium is only an optional shortcut. The paths are repeatable, just tedious if you do not know where to go.
How long does Wood Elf take?
About ten minutes in West Freeport if your Freeport faction is friendly. Add five more minutes for sneak if it is hostile. Half Elf falls out of the same turn-ins automatically.
Does changing a loadout's race count as a new character?
Yes — for level-eligibility and starter zone purposes. Race unlocks are account-wide, so the loadout simply gets the new race you have already earned.
Can I earn Iksar without buying ore?
Yes if you farm the small high quality ore drop yourself. The Qeynos mines have consistent spawns but the Iksar chain is a slow climb either way. Buy only when the auction price is low.
What about Erudite and Halfling?
Erudite and Halfling are starter races — no unlock required. Barbarian, Troll, Ogre, Gnome, and Human are also starter races. The unlock chain covers the five extra races listed above plus Kerra Isle path for Kerran.
