Fifteen Playable Races at Launch

EverQuest Legends launches on July 28, 2026 with 15 playable races drawn from pre-Kunark Norrath — the largest race roster in a curated classic EverQuest experience. At character creation you choose one race, which determines your starting city, faction alignment, and which of the 16 base classes you can combine through multiclassing.

The launch roster includes: Human, Barbarian, Erudite, Wood Elf, High Elf, Dark Elf, Half Elf, Dwarf, Troll, Ogre, Halfling, Gnome, Iksar, Froglok, and Kerran. Each race carries classic stat profiles, size modifiers, and swim/breathe rules familiar to veterans. New players should read our getting started guide before rolling — race choice affects travel routes across Antonica, Faydwer, and Odus.

Unlike modern expansion races bolted onto Luclin-era content, every launch race belongs to the original three-continent map. Daybreak and Game Jawn confirmed no pay-to-unlock race gates at launch — all fifteen are available on day one for every subscriber.

Kerran Revealed at SDCC July 25, 2026

The biggest race announcement arrived at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026, when the EverQuest Legends panel confirmed Kerran as a fully playable race — the first time catfolk from Kerra Isle become a player option in a classic-style EverQuest ruleset. This is not the Luclin-era Vah Shir model: Legends Kerran use the original Kerra Isle NPC aesthetic from classic Odus, with feline features, tail animations, and cultural ties to the island's lore rather than the later moon-city cat people.

Panel hosts highlighted Kerran as a capstone reveal ahead of the July 28 launch, alongside roadmap confirmation and 4K UI scaling. The race supports the same multiclass combinations as other humanoid races, making Kerran viable for melee, caster, and hybrid trios. Watch community coverage in our SDCC Kerran panel video guide and read the launch day guide for server-open timing.

Kerran players start on Kerra Isle in the Odus region — a dedicated newbie zone separate from Erudin and Paineel starters. Expect island quest chains, boat connections to Toxxulia Forest, and early exposure to the Odus continent layout before pushing into Stonebrunt or Cazic-Thule at higher levels.

Starting Zones and Race Geography

Race selection still gates starting geography in Legends. Humans and Barbarians begin on Antonica; Wood Elves, High Elves, Dark Elves, and Half Elves on Faydwer; Erudites in Erudin on Odus. Dwarves, Halflings, and Gnomes use their classic homelands. Trolls, Ogres, and Iksar retain evil-race city starts with faction considerations for grouping and merchant prices.

Froglok returns as a launch race with Gukta / Oggok-adjacent starting content tuned for the revamped difficulty scaling system. Kerran adds a fourth Odus entry point through Kerra Isle, giving Odus three distinct newbie experiences — Erudite arcane cities, Kerran island culture, and mid-level paths into Toxxulia. Our Odus world guide maps zone connections, boat routes, and level ranges across the continent.

Travel between continents uses classic boats, druid/wizard teleports, and zone lines preserved from 1999-era EverQuest. Pick a race whose starting zone matches your preferred early leveling route, or plan a cross-continent journey once you unlock druid or wizard ports on your multiclass character.

Race Unlock Tokens at Level 50

Legends introduces race unlock tokens earned at level 50 per class on your character. Reaching level 50 on a class slot grants a token that unlocks additional race options for future characters of that class — a long-term progression reward rather than a launch-day catch-up mechanic. Tokens are class-specific: a level 50 Warrior unlocks Warrior-eligible races you may not have tried at creation.

This system encourages alt experimentation without invalidating your main. Veterans who master one trio can roll fresh characters with expanded race access on subsequent playthroughs. Tokens do not retroactively change an existing character's race — they unlock options on new rolls only. Plan your primary race carefully for your first character; use tokens to explore flavor builds later.

Pair race planning with the class combo builder and all classes overview to understand which races gate which class combinations at creation versus post-50 unlocks.

Choosing Your Launch Race

For your first character, prioritize a race you enjoy visually and whose starting zone you want to learn first. Kerran and Froglok offer the freshest experiences for veterans who have cleared Human and Elf starts dozens of times. Evil races (Troll, Ogre, Iksar) require faction awareness when grouping with good-race friends — plan alternate characters or neutral-zone meetups.

Multiclass flexibility matters more than race min-maxing at launch. A Kerran Cleric / Wizard / Enchanter plays differently from a Dwarf Warrior / Cleric / Paladin, but both succeed with proper loadouts. Read getting started, confirm your launch day checklist, and join Norrath on July 28 with a race that fits your story.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many playable races are there at launch?
Fifteen: Human, Barbarian, Erudite, Wood Elf, High Elf, Dark Elf, Half Elf, Dwarf, Troll, Ogre, Halfling, Gnome, Iksar, Froglok, and Kerran. All are available on July 28, 2026 without extra purchase.
Is Kerran the same as Luclin Vah Shir?
No. Legends Kerran use the classic Kerra Isle catfolk model from original Odus NPCs, not the Luclin Vah Shir aesthetic. They are a distinct playable race tied to Kerra Isle starting content.
How do race unlock tokens work?
Reach level 50 on a class to earn a token that unlocks additional race options for future characters of that class. Tokens do not change your current character's race — they expand alt creation choices.
Where do Kerran start?
Kerran begin on Kerra Isle in the Odus region, with quest chains and boat access to Toxxulia Forest and the broader Odus continent.
