What Is the Spell Upgrade System?
The Spell Upgrade System is one of the biggest additions introduced during the July 2026 pre-order beta. Game Jawn accelerated this feature ahead of launch after community feedback called for meaningful spell progression without sacrificing build diversity. Instead of relying solely on gear merges, you invest Motes of Potential directly into scribed spells — at rates similar to item merging, not mote merging — to increase spell tier and scaling.
Each upgraded tier can affect mana cost, cast time, damage, healing, duration, summoned pet levels, summoned item tiers, and even resist adjust values depending on the spell. The system pairs naturally with multiclass loadouts: a Wizard / Enchanter / Cleric trio might prioritize different spell books than a Ranger / Druid / Shaman hybrid. Read the latest July 14 patch notes for ongoing tuning.
How Spell Tiering Works
Spell upgrades follow a tier ladder applied to spells already in your spell book. Investing motes raises the spell tier, which cascades into concrete bonuses. As of the July 7 and July 14 beta patches, tier effects include:
- Damage and healing bonuses on direct-effect spells and bard AoE songs like Denon's Disruptive Discord
- Duration scaling for lull, buff, and long-duration effects — small values round to 2–3 ticks at low tiers
- Crowd control cap increases for mez, charm, pacify, fear, and stun spells
- Reagent savings — 10% chance per tier to skip reagent consumption; tier 10 guarantees free reagents
- Summon item tiers — Summoned Dagger X can produce +10 tier items when the base item supports upgrades
- Pet upgrades — Summon Pet and Warder spells add spell rank to pet level (capped at player level minus one), with +6% HP, +1 base damage, and +5 skill points per pet level gained
Upgraded pets persist across zone lines, cast at their upgraded level, and retain upgrades after camping. Buff effects on players and pets with upgraded levels also persist across zoning. Cross-reference exaltations when planning long-term power — spell tiers and gear merges compete for the same mote income.
Investing Motes and UI Workflow
Open your spell book (K), select a scribed spell, and invest motes to raise its tier. You can also right-click and hold a spell in your book to open the upgrade interface directly — the same gesture used for quick inspection of tier costs. Motes earmarked for spell upgrades display with a red border in your inventory, matching the visual language of item merging. Plan spending before dungeon sessions so you do not accidentally commit motes meant for gear.
Motes drop in rank tiers (I through higher ranks) that gate which upgrade levels you can reach. Lower-tier motes feed early spell tiers; higher ranks unlock deeper tiers — similar to how merge costs escalate on gear. Some spell combinations require visiting an NPC spell vendor or trainer to combine upgraded lines, so budget time in starting cities when planning major upgrades.
Important July 14 change: all Motes of Potential are no longer tradable. Every mote you earn must be spent on your own character. This makes personal farming routes from the leveling guide and zone walkthrough more valuable than ever. Solo players should prioritize motes from named mobs in revamped dungeons like Crushbone and Splitpaw listed in our dungeons guide.
Spellblade, Quickbuff, and Symphonic Aura now trigger upgraded spell and song versions automatically. Summon spells inside containers — such as Summon: Phantom Plate — receive tier bonuses on nested items. Fix patches ensured tier 1 summon item spells properly create +1 items.
Class-Specific Upgrade Priorities
Casters (Wizard, Magician, Necromancer, Enchanter): Prioritize your highest-frequency nuke, DoT, or charm spell first. CC specialists benefit enormously from mez and charm tier caps before raw damage.
Healers (Cleric, Druid, Shaman): Upgrade your primary group heal and single-target emergency heal. The divine invocation now targets self pets and group pets at reduced HP priority — pet-heavy shaman builds should upgrade pet summon spells early.
Hybrids and melee (Ranger, Paladin, Shadow Knight, Bard): Bard players should upgrade AoE songs for group damage. Rangers gained Disrupting Shot at level 20 in the July 14 patch — a new discipline that interrupts casting. Pair spell upgrades with stances and invocations for melee-caster blends.
Pet classes: Pet tier upgrades stack with charmed pet inventory from the July 7 patch. Charmed pets equip player-given items and report inventory when charm breaks — upgrade Summon Pet lines before pushing higher difficulty tiers.
Beta Balance and Launch Expectations
Spell upgrades remain in active tuning through the pre-order beta ending July 21, 2026. Weapon upgrade reverts shipped alongside spell tiering so players are not double-penalized on progression paths. At launch on July 28, expect spell tier costs and caps to stabilize. Bookmark this page and patch notes for post-launch adjustments. Combine spell planning with the class combo builder to model how tier investments shift your role coverage before committing motes.
