Public vs Personal Instances

EverQuest Legends launched July 28, 2026 with two instance models running side by side. Public instances behave like classic EverQuest dungeons — shared zones where groups compete for camps, named mobs, and zone-wide spawns. Personal instances spin up a private copy keyed to your character or group, with personal loot tables and adjustable difficulty scaling from D0 through D4.

Personal instances solved the spawn-camping problem that plagued original EQ while preserving public zones for players who want authentic social friction. Solo farmers use personal copies almost exclusively; raid-focused groups mix public Nagafen runs with personal Plane of Sky tiers. See solo raids and dungeons and raids for zone-specific recommendations.

The Charge System

Entering a personal instance consumes an Instance Charge. Charges regenerate at a rate of one per hour, capping at a maximum of two stored charges. You only lose a charge on successful entry — failed connections or cancelled prompts do not drain your pool. Plan dungeon sessions around the two-charge ceiling: most solo players run a personal instance, exit to rebuff, and wait for the next charge rather than chain multiple entries back-to-back.

The July 7, 2026 patch confirmed charges consume only on successful spin-up, and leaving an instance returns you to the base zone at difficulty zero. This prevents charge griefing from disconnects and makes personal instances predictable for limited playtime schedules.

Difficulty Scaling D0–D4

When you enter a personal instance, select a difficulty tier from D0 (easiest) through D4 (hardest). Higher tiers increase mob hit points, damage, and ability frequency while scaling loot quality and quantity. D0 suits level-appropriate solo farming; D2–D3 matches small-group tuned content; D4 targets players who want classic-era raid pressure without needing a full forty-person roster.

Difficulty choice persists for the entire instance run. You cannot mid-run swap tiers — exit, wait for charges if needed, and re-enter at a new setting. Pair tier selection with your multiclass loadout: charm trios excel at D1–D2 outdoor-style pulls inside dungeons, while Warrior / Cleric / Enchanter groups push D3–D4 for better drop rates on named mobs.

Raid Lockouts and Weekly Loot

Raid bosses in personal instances use a weekly lockout for full loot tables. Defeating a raid boss typically yields roughly seven items per boss on the first kill of the week — spread across your group in public raids or consolidated into personal loot in solo instances. Once locked, you cannot receive the full table again until the weekly timer resets.

A daily bonus drop refreshes at 8:00 AM Pacific Time, granting one additional item from that boss's loot pool even if you are on weekly lockout. This daily cadence rewards consistent login without forcing seven-day idle periods. Track reset timers in-game and coordinate with guildmates running public Nagafen or Plane of Sky schedules.

Leaving Instances and Guaranteed Drops

Quitting or completing a personal instance returns you to the zone line outside — you leave the dungeon entirely rather than camping inside the public layer. This matches the July 7 patch behavior: instance exit equals zone exit at D0 difficulty context.

Even when you are on full weekly loot lockout, raid bosses still grant one guaranteed unique drop per kill — a curated item from the boss table that avoids duplicate fill. You will not receive the full seven-item spread, but dedicated farmers still run daily lockout kills for that guaranteed piece. Combine this with the 8 AM PT daily bonus for steady progression without needing fresh weekly lockouts every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do instance charges work?
Personal instances cost one charge on successful entry. Charges regenerate one per hour up to a maximum of two stored charges.
What is the difference between weekly and daily raid loot?
Weekly lockout grants the full loot table (~seven items per boss). Daily reset at 8 AM PT adds one extra item even on lockout.
What happens if I quit an instance?
You return to the base zone outside the dungeon. You leave the instance entirely — you do not remain inside the public zone layer.
Can I still get loot on weekly lockout?
Yes. Locked bosses still drop one guaranteed unique item per kill, plus the daily 8 AM PT bonus item.
